DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
Flesh is a story about an act of defiance, an act of rebellion against the order of things. I related to the story, as for me, the whole piece is a metaphor. The simplicity of the story structure is underlined by a strong opinion: having the right to make our own choices. Regarding this, Flesh can speak to everyone.
— Lisa Cruz, Director, 2020
WRITER’S STATEMENT
Flesh is a father-daughter story about power.
It's set in Herefordshire, which is where I grew up. I wanted to capture the sense of unknown threat that I felt at that age, half-way in between being a girl and a woman. In the countryside, where farming is the biggest industry, gender is functional, financial. Edible animals are bred; the others which are a threat are hunted. Cam, the protagonist, rebels against the order of the land and though Flesh is a tragedy, but there is hope in the stubborn refusal to give up what you want.
